Storm season is upon us and we’d like to remind property owners and tenants how to ensure they keep themselves and their property safe during this time.
Before a storm
Keep an eye on the news of a storm event and prior to its arrival, make sure you’re prepared. Check for roof leaks, overhanging trees and any issues with guttering. See that drainage is clear and flowing, especially in low-lying areas and in basements. Have any issues repaired before the storm event or the damages caused will be more costly.
Prepare emergency numbers and an emergency kit with items such as a torch, candles and car charger. Have an evacuation procedure in place and be sure no potential debris can block emergency exit paths.
Take a look at your insurance policy to be sure how it covers natural disasters. Remember that body corporate insurance does not cover personal contents.
In the event of a storm
Secure all loose items in outdoor areas, such as garden chairs, umbrellas and pot plants. Do not park any vehicles in low-lying areas in case of flood. Stay on top of weather condition reports and evacuation notices
After the storm, avoid flooded areas and fallen power lines. Once it’s safe to do so, assess any damages. Take photos and report them as soon as possible to your Property Manager.
Taking these precautions now could reduce damage and financial loss, and help to keep you and your neighbours safe.
